Trump Administration Cancels $477 Million in Grants Focused on Transgender Community
The Trump administration says it has canceled nearly $500 million in federal grants that focused on research and education related to the transgender community. The move is outlined in a newly released White House memo detailing how the administration is enforcing a January executive order.
That order bans the federal government from funding or facilitating gender-affirming care for children. As part of the directive's enforcement, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reviewed its portfolio of research and education funding.
According to the memo, HHS canceled hundreds of grants, including 215 that were specifically focused on transgender issues. The total value of those grants was $477 million.
The decision has drawn sharp reactions from advocacy groups and researchers, who argue the cancellations could hinder vital public health efforts and understanding of the transgender population. Supporters of the administration’s decision say it aligns with the White House's stance on limiting federal involvement in gender-affirming care for minors.
The administration has not yet disclosed which institutions or programs were affected by the cancellations.
