Palm Springs Police Warn Seniors of Sophisticated Scam Tactics

The Palm Springs Police Department is raising the alarm as scams aimed at seniors become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. According to Police Chief Andy Mills, thieves are refining their tactics to trick older residents into revealing personal and financial information, often causing significant emotional and financial harm.

In a recent conversation with NBC Palm Springs’ Fred Roggin, Chief Mills emphasized a critical point: legitimate law enforcement agencies will never call residents to request money or sensitive information. “A lot of people get calls from someone claiming to be from the police or sheriff’s department, but the reality is we will never call and ask for money,” Mills explained. He urged the public to be wary of requests for payment over the phone or through email, especially those citing legal trouble or promising official-sounding reasons.

Chief Mills also advised that organizations such as the Police Officers Association (POA) never solicit funds by phone. He encouraged residents to hang up immediately if they receive suspicious calls and to report the incident to authorities.
