Former Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet Heads to Trial After Years-Long Corruption Investigation
After years of delays and mounting anticipation, former Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet and real estate developer John Wessman are set to stand trial in a case that has cast a long shadow over city politics. The trial, which begins with jury selection next Tuesday, May 6th, in Banning, comes nearly a decade after the 2015 FBI raid on Palm Springs City Hall that launched a sweeping corruption investigation.
Pougnet, who served as mayor from 2007 to 2015, faces 21 felony counts, including bribery and perjury. Prosecutors allege that Pougnet accepted $375,000 over several years in exchange for supporting building projects spearheaded by Wessman and his associate, Richard Meaney. One of the focal points of the case is the Kimpton Rowan Hotel development in downtown Palm Springs—a site that had sat vacant for decades before recent revitalization efforts.
Speaking outside the Larson Justice Center in Indio, Pougnet expressed his eagerness to finally address the charges in court. “It’s been almost 10 years since investigations started. There’s been countless delays in the courtrooms. So finally, I will have my day in court to clear my name of the alleged accusations,” he told NBC Palm Springs.
Despite facing the possibility of more than 19 years in prison if convicted, Pougnet reflected on his role in Palm Springs’ downtown renaissance, saying, “I’m proud of that legacy downtown. And now I’ll clear my name from the alleged accusations, and we’ll move on.”
The case has experienced multiple postponements since 2023, frustrating both the defendants and the public eager for resolution. As the trial moves forward, it is expected to draw significant attention, given its implications for local government integrity and development practices.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
