Road Work Picks Up Across The Valley For The Summer
Now that Festival Season is officially behind us, road construction across the Coachella Valley is shifting into high gear. In this week’s Know Before You Go, Kris Gunterson from the CVSync Traffic Management Center joined NBC Palm Springs to highlight which projects to watch and how to stay ahead of the slowdowns.
La Quinta: Signal Work Starts This Week
Kicking things off is a traffic signal cabinet replacement project in La Quinta. This week’s focus is at Jefferson Street and Avenue 48, where crews will be replacing signal equipment on Tuesday. During the work, the traffic light will go dark and temporary stop signs will be in place. Expect slower traffic, though no lane closures are planned.
Tip: To avoid delays, consider using Madison, Monroe, or Washington Streets, and take Highway 111 instead of Avenue 48 when heading east or west.
Palm Desert: Big Projects on the Horizon
Expect a busy summer in Palm Desert, starting with:
El Paseo Resurfacing: A full resurfacing project will cover El Paseo between Highway 74 and Highway 111.
Slurry Seal Work: This oil-and-gravel treatment will be applied across the north side of Palm Desert. Some of this work will take place overnight to minimize disruption.
Stay tuned for more details as closure dates and detours are finalized. These are multi-phase projects that will require flexibility and patience.
Also in Palm Desert, the Water District is planning a water line project on Cook Street, which will begin in early June. For now, crews are focusing on landscaping, but expect intermittent slowdowns once the infrastructure work begins.
Back to La Quinta: Highway 111 Overhaul
One of the most anticipated projects is the full rehabilitation of Highway 111 in La Quinta. Locals have been voicing concerns over the rough condition of the road, and now, a full teardown and rebuild is scheduled to begin in early June. This includes new road base, fresh blacktop, and restriping.
To ease congestion during this work, traffic engineers are adjusting signal timing on nearby corridors to improve flow and reduce backups.
Construction season is in full swing, and as always, knowing before you go can save you time, frustration, and maybe even an accident. Stay alert, stay patient, and keep your phone out of reach when driving.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery are one step closer to completing their $110 billion merger after a coalition of 12 state attorneys general reached a settlement with Paramount. The settlement resolves the states’ antitrust lawsuit, though it still requires court approval. A high-speed police chase in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, came to a dramatic end when the vehicle plunged into Lake Como. Dashcam video released by police shows the pursuit before the car crashes into the water. Four people inside the vehicle were pulled from the lake with no serious injuries reported.
