President Trump Meets Canadian PM Mark Carney Amid Rising Trade Tensions and Tariff Talks

President Donald Trump met today with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Washington, marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Carney took office. The visit comes amid heightened trade tensions between the longtime allies, triggered by a series of new U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports.

“I’m not sure what he wants to see me about, but I guess he wants to make a deal. Everybody does,” President Trump said ahead of the meeting, signaling openness to negotiations.

Prime Minister Carney has publicly challenged Trump’s trade policies, particularly tariffs imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum. He has also criticized Trump’s comments suggesting Canada could become America’s "51st state."

“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen,” Carney declared during his campaign.

Despite the rhetoric, Carney posted a video upon arriving in Washington, expressing his commitment to working with the U.S. to create mutually beneficial economic opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration says it’s looking to finalize a number of trade deals in the coming weeks. Talks with China remain deadlocked, with Beijing enforcing a 145% tariff on U.S. imports. The impact is already being felt by American consumers as prices rise.

On Capitol Hill, Senate Democrats are pushing for legislation that would exempt small businesses from new tariffs. “Trump’s tariff tax is jacking up prices, smashing supply chains, and forcing small shops to raise costs,” one lawmaker said.

Hollywood is also watching closely as the president floats a possible 100% tariff on foreign-made films. Critics warn it could stifle an industry already weakened by pandemic shutdowns, strikes, and natural disasters. Advocates argue expanding U.S. tax incentives would be a better way to bring film production back to American soil.
