President Trump Proposes 100% Tariff on Foreign-Made Films Amid Industry Concerns

President Donald Trump is drawing attention in the entertainment industry after calling for a 100% tariff on movies made outside the United States. The proposal, posted to his True Social account over the weekend, claims foreign incentives are draining America’s movie industry and shifting production overseas.

“The movie industry in America is dying a very fast death,” Trump wrote, suggesting that tax incentives in countries like Canada are pulling studios away from traditional hubs like Hollywood and Atlanta.

Speaking outside the White House Sunday night, Trump expanded on his remarks. “A lot of them have stolen our movie industry,” he said, referring to foreign governments. “If they're not willing to make a movie inside the United States, then we should have a tariff on movies that come in.”

Industry experts say the proposal is full of uncertainty. Peter Gregg, chair of the Department of Emerging Media at St. Thomas University, questioned how the policy would be implemented.

“Does that mean it’s where the production takes place? Is it where post-production happens? Or is it based on the company that owns the production entities?” Gregg asked. “There’s no clear mechanism yet.”

Gregg also pointed to the practical concerns of such a tariff. With the U.S. already offering incentives in places like Georgia and California, the threat of higher costs could actually deter some projects from being made at all.

“It disincentivizes the making of a movie, period,” Gregg said. “Instead of saying we should make this film domestically, it may just stop the film from getting made at all.”

With summer blockbusters on the horizon, many in the industry are watching closely to see whether this idea gains traction—or fizzles out in development.
