Rancho Mirage Elementary Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Cultural Dance and Community Unity

Rancho Mirage Elementary School brought vibrant color and culture to campus in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, hosting a lively event that honored Hispanic heritage and community unity. NBC Palm Springs’ Kai Beach was there to capture the joy and meaning behind the celebration.

“It’s nice to show my culture through dance, especially on this day,” said one young performer. The school partnered with Desert Hot Springs High School to bring the Ballet Folklórico troupe to campus, where they performed traditional dances for students and staff.

Dr. Shane Hagar, principal of Rancho Mirage Elementary, emphasized the importance of cultural reflection and representation. “Today is Cinco de Mayo, and luckily we were able to engage some community partners… to show our students that celebrating culture is one of the most important things that we need to talk about today,” he said. “Students need to see a reflection of themselves in older students who set a good example. This could inspire them to pursue similar passions later in life.”

Maria Montes, a representative from Desert Hot Springs High School, noted the broader impact of such events. “It’s important to this community to show the variety and the culture that happens in the valley… not only with us but with various other schools that also celebrate this day,” she said.

Students learned that dance is a form of self-expression, no matter the style — from folklórico to hip-hop. Organizers hope this event becomes a yearly tradition, reminding students to embrace their identity and celebrate their cultural roots.

“The majority of our students are Latin American,” Dr. Hagar added, “and it’s important they know they have a huge part to play here at Rancho Mirage Elementary School.”
