Trump Administration Shuts Down Key CDC Infection Control Committee
The Trump administration has officially shut down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC), a move that has raised concerns among public health experts.
HICPAC was a key advisory body that helped shape national infection control standards for hospitals and other healthcare settings. Its guidance influenced protocols on hand hygiene, mask use, patient isolation, and other essential procedures aimed at minimizing the spread of infectious diseases.
According to four members of the now-disbanded committee, the CDC notified them on Friday that the committee had been terminated. However, an official CDC letter indicated the decision had already taken effect in late March.
The abrupt disbanding of the committee comes at a time when infection prevention remains a pressing issue in hospitals, with new threats like antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the continued emergence of infectious diseases requiring vigilant standards.
Critics of the decision argue that removing the advisory committee undermines evidence-based policymaking and weakens the country’s preparedness for future health crises. There has been no public explanation from the Trump administration about the rationale behind the move.
