Authorities Search for Suspect After Elephant Seal Pup Stabbed on Oregon Beach

Authorities are searching for a suspect after a 6-month-old elephant seal pup was stabbed multiple times on the beach in Neskowin, Oregon. The incident occurred on the night of March 16 between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., near Proposal Rock Condominiums.

Gregory Miller, a volunteer with the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Stranding Network, had been monitoring the pup for about three weeks prior to the attack. He said he left the area around 8 p.m. that evening and noticed signs of minor bleeding on the seal the next day.

Despite the wounds, the pup appeared to recover and was later spotted around Seaside, where it became somewhat of a local celebrity. “It didn’t seem to affect him at all,” Miller said. “He still carried on his patterns.”

Authorities described the suspect as a man with a groomed beard, white and black hair, and a large gap between his front teeth. He was reportedly driving a 1990s Dodge or Chrysler van with a rear passenger window on the driver’s side covered in plastic.

According to the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement, crimes like this can be punishable by up to one year in jail and fines reaching $100,000.

Officials are continuing their investigation and seeking the public’s help in identifying both the suspect and the vehicle used during the crime.
