Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The announcement came Thursday as he stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, marking the beginning of his leadership over the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

At 69, Pope Leo XIV becomes the 267th pontiff and the first in history to hail from the United States. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Prevost brings with him a unique blend of American roots and deep global experience, having served extensively in Latin America and the Vatican.

The conclave of cardinals selected him after just two days of voting, a timeline that mirrors the swift decisions that brought Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI to office. His election signals a continuation of the reformist path charted by Pope Francis, especially with regard to inclusion, transparency, and the fight against clerical abuse.

Prior to his election, Pope Leo XIV led the Vatican’s powerful Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing global bishop appointments. He also served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and was a missionary in Peru for over a decade—experience that colleagues say has shaped his global vision and compassionate leadership style.

Despite long-held assumptions that the Church would never choose an American due to U.S. geopolitical influence, Prevost's deep ties abroad may have calmed such concerns among his fellow cardinals.

"He’s calm, balanced, and clear,” said Elise Allen, CNN’s Vatican analyst. “He’s seen as an exceptional leader—missionary in heart and administrator by skill.”

A member of the Augustinian religious order, Prevost earned degrees in mathematics, theology, and canon law, and has long championed expanding roles for women in Church governance.

In his own words, Pope Leo XIV recently said, “My vocation, like that of every Christian, is to be a missionary, to proclaim the Gospel wherever one is.”

His leadership begins at a pivotal time for the Catholic Church, as it faces global challenges ranging from declining attendance in the West to deepening crises of abuse and governance. All eyes now turn to how Pope Leo XIV will shape the next era of Catholicism.
