Sacred Heart School Students Celebrate the Election of a New Pope

At Sacred Heart School, students and staff shared a profound moment as they witnessed the election of a new pope, a powerful tradition within the Catholic Church. A second-grade teacher and two students reflected on the excitement of watching the Vatican chimney for the symbolic white smoke, which finally appeared after two days, signaling the successful selection of a new pontiff. With Pope Francis having recently passed away, the school community has been learning about the papal election process and embracing its spiritual and historical significance. Throughout the day, classes watched the live coverage, celebrating together as the Church entered a new chapter of leadership.

The newly elected pontiff, known as Pope Leo XIV, is the first pope from the United States, and the new leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. The 69-year-old from Chicago, stepped into his role as the 267th pope on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday evening, addressing thousands of cheering Catholics with the words: “Peace be with you all.”
