Trump Announces 'Comprehensive' Trade Agreement With UK, Final Details Still Pending

President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with the United Kingdom on Thursday, calling it a "full and comprehensive" deal, despite acknowledging that key details are still being finalized.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump described the pending deal as “very conclusive,” suggesting nearly all major elements have been agreed upon. “In the coming weeks we'll have it all very conclusive. But the actual deal is a very conclusive one,” Trump said, though he confirmed final terms are still being written.

Despite Trump’s framing, US and UK officials told CNN the agreement remains limited in scope and leans heavily on future economic commitments. The 10% universal tariffs currently placed on most goods imported to the US will remain in place under the deal.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added, “We still have a 10% tariff on, which will produce $6 billion in revenue for the United States.”

The terms outlined in Thursday’s announcement include easing auto tariffs for the UK and eliminating tariffs on steel and aluminum. In return, the UK is expected to make concessions on imports of food, agriculture, and machinery.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the announcement, stating, “We are the first country to secure such a deal with the United States. And in an era of global instability and insecurity, that is so important.”

CNN’s Julia Benbrook reports this is the first of several trade deals the White House has hinted at. “For weeks now, the White House has said they are talking to more than a dozen countries about potential trade deals, but this is the first agreement to be announced,” Benbrook said.

Next on the administration’s trade agenda: talks with China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet with Chinese officials this weekend in Switzerland. Bessent has cautioned against high expectations, saying the meetings are aimed more at “de-escalation” than producing a major agreement.
