Vermont Elementary Students Paint Mural With Powerful Message: "You Are Loved"

A message of love and community is now on permanent display at Orchard Elementary School in South Burlington, Vermont, thanks to a school-wide art project that united students, staff, and parents.

The newly painted mural, featuring the words “You Are Loved,” was created to foster a lasting sense of positivity and inclusion for everyone at the school. Students enthusiastically took part, filling in the vibrant design with brushes in hand.

“It has made me really happy, because the mural will be on this wall for a while at Orchard School,” said student Emma Mahoney.

The project was the brainchild of Orchard staff and families who wanted to offer a warm welcome and a reminder of support to all who pass through the school’s front entrance. “To make the school more beautiful,” said Ava Lea, another student participant. “We decided it would be a fun art project to do as a full school.”

For muralist Alex Cook, who led the project, it’s part of a larger mission. He has painted similar “You Are Loved” murals with communities across the country, aiming to break down barriers around emotional expression.

“People are in a very serious battle sometimes to feel good, to feel happy, to feel loved, to feel involved and important, and like they matter,” Cook said. “To put a mural in a place that says something as intimate as 'you are loved'… I feel like that can be very healthy.”

Cook also painted a similar mural off Church Street in downtown Burlington.

Students say the project was more than just paint on a wall—it brought them together. “I feel like it kind of brings everyone together, especially like the new people here,” said student Cecelia Garcia.

As for the message? It’s clear, colorful, and from the heart.
