150 Dogs Rescued in Utah Hoarding Case—Could This Happen in the Coachella Valley?

Imagine walking into a home in Palm Springs or Desert Hot Springs and finding over 150 dogs and cats living in squalor. It’s unthinkable—but it's exactly what authorities in Ogden, Utah, discovered just last month.

Now, the first animal rescued from that scene has tragically died. Her name was Koko.

Koko, a tiny 5-pound pup, was taken in by Lisa Peterson, a neighbor who lives just a few blocks from where the animals were hoarded. Peterson says Koko had never been touched before—completely terrified of human interaction, a result of years of emotional trauma and inbreeding.

“When I got her, you could tell human touch was a scary thing for her,” Peterson said. Koko was slowly recovering, but passed away this week following complications after being spayed. She was only about four years old.

Peterson was in the process of adopting Koko and now plans to launch Dirt Roads Rescue, a nonprofit to help dogs like Koko. “There are only so many kennels, only so many hands that can help,” she said. “And the laws just aren’t enough.”

The suspects in the case, Miguel Salgado-Vargas and his nephew, Ramon Aispuro, now face hundreds of charges related to animal cruelty.

While this case happened in Utah, it prompts a difficult question: Could this happen here in the Coachella Valley?

Local advocates say yes—and in some ways, it already has. With ongoing concerns about animal shelter overcrowding, limited rescue resources, and abandoned pets, communities like ours are not immune. That’s why Lisa Peterson is urging people everywhere to step up—by fostering, adopting, or supporting animal rescues.

“Yeah, it was really hard. And it was really avoidable,” she said of Koko’s death.
