Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month in the Coachella Valley: Honoring Culture, Community, and Cuisine

Across the country, the month of May marks as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of AAPI communities. In the Coachella Valley, Asian and Pacific Islanders make up approximately 3% of the population, according to the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership, and the celebration is both meaningful and personal.

Local businesses like Fil-Am Oriental Market in Cathedral City are leading the way. Senior Store Clerk, Nina Cabrera says the store, which also operates as a restaurant, serves as more than just a place to shop—it’s a cultural hub and safe space for the community. “We try to bring everything that we can from the Philippines, so we can cater to the Asian community here in the Valley,” Cabrera said.

Meanwhile, Secret Poke, an Asian-owned poke spot, shares similar values. “There’s not many Filipino business owners that I know of, so I’m very proud of it,” said owner Llandro Abadille, reflecting on the hard work and sacrifices of their immigrant parents.

Community leaders emphasize the importance of passing down traditions and supporting local AAPI-owned businesses. As celebrations continue through the month, residents are encouraged to explore the food, stories, and cultural pride that make AAPI Heritage Month special.
