Indio High School Hosts Wellness Event to Support Student Mental Health

Indio High School students spent the day focusing on self-care, emotional well-being, and mental health during a school-wide wellness event designed to help students manage stress and build healthier habits.

Held on campus and supported by district mental health professionals, the event featured nearly 30 interactive booths. These included activities like planting, solving puzzles, writing affirmations, collecting inspirational stickers, and exploring mental health literature. Each station aimed to give students simple tools to cope with school-related pressure and life challenges.

Organizers say the idea stemmed from a mental health day held at another school in the district. Indio High School’s full-time campus therapist collaborated with the counseling department to bring the idea to life. “We thought it was a great opportunity to do something meaningful,” said one counselor.

Lorena Magana, a student leader involved in organizing the event, helped coordinate a space where students could express themselves and engage with supportive resources in fun, creative ways. A standout attraction was Luna, a therapy dog who offered comfort and companionship to students throughout the day.

A whiteboard titled "How would you want someone to emotionally support you?" invited students to share their thoughts, with sticky notes offering ideas like “by listening to me,” “being a good friend,” and “just being there when I need them.”

Close to 400 students took part in the event, walking away with mental health resources and new ways to prioritize their emotional wellness.
