Pink Tap Water Forces Iowa Town to Switch to Bottled Water—Could It Happen Here?
Residents of Kimballton, Iowa—population just over 200—were left stunned this week when their tap water suddenly turned pink. A malfunction at the town's water tower disrupted filtration systems, forcing the entire community to switch to bottled water for drinking.
“When I turned on the faucet, I thought maybe the radishes were leaking into the water,” said resident Pat Crosley. “Then I realized—it was actually coming out of the spigot.”
City officials confirmed that the issue was tied to a problem with the tower’s filters. While the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has declared the water safe for bathing, residents remain wary and are relying on bottled water for drinking and cooking.
“You don’t realize how much water you use until it’s not available,” said resident Paul Christensen, while picking up cases of water donated by Hy-Vee at city hall.
Kimballton City Clerk April Baldwin described the situation as “pretty aggravating,” noting that the town had already been dealing with ongoing water issues. “Our city residents have had enough of that already.”
While the water's unusual pink hue has drawn national attention, the concern is very real—and it raises a question that hits close to home: What if something like this happened in the Coachella Valley?
Aging infrastructure and extreme weather can put stress on even the most modern water systems. It’s a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance, transparent communication, and emergency preparedness.
As Kimballton waits for final safety tests before lifting the advisory, officials there—and perhaps here—are being reminded that safe, clean drinking water is never something to take for granted.
