Donation Pays Off Wichita Seniors’ Lunch Debt So They Can Graduate—Could Coachella Valley Schools Do the Same?

In Wichita, Kansas, a generous donation is making sure high school seniors won’t be held back from graduation because of unpaid lunch debt. The Wichita Public Schools Nutrition Department provides 50,000 meals daily—whether students can pay or not—but debt has quietly piled up over the years.

The TGC Group stepped in with a $10,000 donation to help cover the unpaid balances of graduating seniors after learning some students were at risk of missing graduation due to outstanding debt.

“We hate to see kids that are struggling. It’s not their fault,” said Sabrina Esterline, TGC Group’s philanthropy director.

The district, which currently faces more than $330,000 in total lunch debt, says the donation could help between 200 and 300 seniors. David Paul, Wichita Public Schools Nutrition Director, said it will alleviate a long-standing problem: “This has been an issue since I started here 35 years ago.”

In addition to lunch debt, some Wichita schools have received help from alumni associations to pay off textbook and other school fees to allow students to participate in graduation.

The district also offers families payment plans and a “Giving Tree” online portal for ongoing donations. Seniors are even given the option to donate any leftover meal account funds to help younger students.

While this heartwarming act of generosity is making headlines in Kansas, the story raises an important question for the Coachella Valley: Could something similar help local students facing the same financial barriers? School officials and community leaders may take inspiration from Wichita’s model to explore ways to ensure every student gets the chance to walk across the graduation stage.
