Arizona Tree Trimmer Dies in Tragic Palm Tree Accident, Family Seeks Help for Burial
An Arizona family is mourning the tragic loss of a loved one who died while working to support them.
Authorities say 42-year-old Jaime Yepiz-Solis was trimming a 50-foot palm tree near 67th Avenue and Thomas Road in west Phoenix on Saturday morning when he became trapped by heavy fronds. Emergency responders freed him, but he later died from suffocation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that palm fronds can collapse unexpectedly, encasing and crushing the chest of tree trimmers.
“He tried his best to come see us. He would always bring us food and everything,” said Aimee Yepiz, his daughter. “I just can’t believe I don’t have a dad anymore.”
Yepiz-Solis, remembered for his love of cooking, especially ceviche, had worked as a tree trimmer for 12 years. Family members describe him as a devoted father who made it a point to text his daughters good morning every day.
“It happened on Mexican Mother’s Day, and his mom is in Mexico,” said Patricia Perez, his former partner. “All she asks is that we take her baby home.”
The family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to return his body to Mexico for burial. As of Monday afternoon, more than $6,000 had been donated.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not yet confirmed the exact circumstances of how Yepiz-Solis became trapped.
