Families Beat the Heat at LA County Fair as Temperatures Soar Into Triple Digits

The Southern California heat wave has arrived, but that hasn’t stopped thousands of families from attending the LA County Fair in Pomona. NBC Palm Springs’ Christian Cavares visited the fairgrounds where temperatures climbed into the upper 90s and even triple digits across parts of the Inland Empire.

“It’s really hot. We’re definitely sweating and getting kind of sticky, so it’s not the best,” said Bobby Willis, who traveled with her family from Hesperia only to find hotter conditions than expected.

Despite the heat, many kids hardly noticed as they enjoyed the rides and attractions. Charmaine Cook of Riverside described the added challenge of making sure her son stayed safe. “He burned his hand on a metal surface that had been exposed to the sun,” she explained.

Six-year-old Michael, however, found plenty of fun. “I saw the pigs, the cows, the goats and sheep,” he said, unfazed by the sweltering temperatures.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that high heat can be dangerous, especially for children and older adults. Symptoms like dizziness, muscle cramping, and excessive sweating should not be ignored. Health experts recommend drinking lots of water, taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and seeking medical help if needed.

Fair officials have taken extra measures, providing water bottle refill stations and offering plenty of shaded rest areas. “We actually have water bottle refill stations in all of our buildings, which are air-conditioned,” an official stated.

And families have their own tricks too. “We’re going for the frozen lemonades,” one fairgoer said. “Anything that’s really cold is what we’re going to try to go for right now.”

The fair fun continues as families balance enjoying the event with staying safe in the summer heat.
