FDA Approves New Natural Food Color Additives Including Butterfly Pea Flower and Galdaria Extract

In a move aimed at providing safer alternatives to artificial food colorings, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three new natural food color additives. The decision comes after growing concerns over the health effects of synthetic dyes.

The newly approved additives include Galdaria Extract Blue, Butterfly Pea Flower Extract, and Calcium Phosphate. According to the FDA, Galdaria Extract Blue is derived from a type of red algae found in volcanic hot springs and is used for its vibrant red coloring.

Butterfly Pea Flower Extract, already popular in other parts of the world, is made by extracting water from dried butterfly pea flower petals, producing a rich blue hue. It has been approved for use in sports drinks, fruit beverages, and other liquids in the U.S.

The third approved additive, Calcium Phosphate, provides a white color and has been cleared for use in products like chicken and candies.

The FDA’s approval of these natural alternatives is seen as a step forward in offering food manufacturers and consumers safer and more environmentally friendly choices. These new colorants will help reduce reliance on synthetic dyes, which have been linked to health concerns in some studies.
