Know Before You Go: La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs Face Major Traffic Impacts This Week

Commuters across the Coachella Valley should expect traffic delays and detours this week due to multiple construction projects. NBC Palm Springs’ Know Before You Go traffic expert Chris Gunterson provided an overview of the key trouble spots and suggestions to minimize delays.

In La Quinta, a long-overdue traffic signal cabinet replacement is underway at Washington Street and Avenue 52. While there won’t be lane closures, the signal will be dark at times, requiring temporary stop signs. Motorists exiting La Quinta Cove are advised to use Eisenhower Drive, while those coming from South La Quinta are encouraged to stay on Jefferson Street to avoid backups. The work is expected to be completed in a day, though unforeseen adjustments could extend the project.

In Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage, Southern California Edison crews are replacing an electrical vault on Monterey Avenue. The work impacts southbound lanes between Magnesia Falls and Grand Via Las Palmas and is expected to last about three weeks, with crews working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Suggested detours include Bob Hope Drive and Cook Street.

In Palm Springs, the South Palm Canyon Bridge project has moved into the next phase, shifting traffic to the east side of the bridge while the west side undergoes demolition. Drivers can expect heavy construction activity and detours. Alternate routes include Bellardo Road and Ramon Road.
