Lawmakers Push for Social Media Warning Labels to Protect Kids’ Mental Health
Lawmakers across the country are stepping up efforts to protect young people from the potential dangers of social media. From California to Texas and New York, there is a growing movement to require warning labels on social media platforms specifically aimed at teens.
NBC Bay Area’s Ian Call reports that local lawmakers and youth advocates are urging platforms to be more transparent about the mental health risks associated with excessive use. “We know that warning labels won’t fix everything, but they tell the truth,” one advocate said. “And kids deserve the truth more than tech companies deserve silence.”
The Kids Code Coalition recently held a virtual press conference to promote a proposal currently under consideration in the California Assembly. Under this bill, users would see a warning label when they initially sign into their social media accounts. After three hours of continuous use, the warning would fully take over the screen for 90 seconds, preventing any interaction until the time elapsed.
Texas has already taken action. A bill there has passed the state house, largely driven by the testimony of 15-year-old Ayan Molodina, who has spoken openly about the pressures he and his peers face. “Watching others live ‘perfect’ lives online can make us feel like we’re always falling short,” Molodina said. “I’ve been broken before, and I’ve seen my peers break.”
California’s legislation has bipartisan support and is scheduled to be reviewed by a committee later this month. Advocates hope that by passing similar measures in multiple states, they will encourage Congress to establish a national policy.
Molodina believes such a warning could have made a difference. “If I had seen those warnings when I was in the darkest places in my life… I might have asked for support sooner,” he shared.
The growing concern over youth mental health and the role of social media continues to be a priority for lawmakers, advocates, and families nationwide.
