Nurses Face Growing Challenges Amid Focus on Wellness for National Nurses Day

This year’s National Nurses Day spotlighted a critical issue: the health and well-being of the nation’s nurses. Years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, many nurses continue to face severe workplace challenges, including staff shortages and the emotional strain of the profession.

Reporter Michael Yoshida explained that although many assume nurses work solely in hospitals, more than 40% of nurses serve in community health centers, long-term care facilities, schools, and home health care.

Nurses have been ranked the most trusted profession in the United States for over 20 consecutive years, according to Gallup. Yet, the nursing workforce faces increasing stressors: rising demand, an aging workforce approaching retirement, and limited availability of new nurses entering the field.

Burnout, workplace distress, and violence are also serious concerns. The American Nurses Association (ANA) reports that 75% of nurses have experienced some form of violence, harassment, or bullying while on the job.

ANA President Jennifer Mincet Kennedy emphasized the importance of raising awareness and supporting nurses. “Since the pandemic, there has been an increase in workplace wellness programs,” Kennedy noted. “But we must remain vigilant as challenges persist.”

Adding to the uncertainty is the recent unveiling of a Medicaid overhaul proposal from House Republicans. The plan could potentially cut billions of dollars from Medicaid spending. “We’re creating an environment in which we’re bankrupting the country,” one representative said, pointing to healthcare’s large share of the federal budget.

However, Kennedy warns that further Medicaid cuts would worsen the already dire shortage of nurses and nursing assistants in long-term care. “We already are short-staffed. Any cuts would mean fewer caregivers available to take care of patients,” she said.

The debate over healthcare funding and support for the nursing workforce is ongoing, but the message this National Nurses Day is clear: the nation’s healthcare backbone needs immediate and sustained support.
