Coachella Valley Pushes for Bike Safety While Run for the Wall Riders Stop in Coachella on Journey to D.C.

Bike safety is at the forefront across the Coachella Valley as local parents, advocates, and city leaders unite to push for safer streets. NBC Palm Springs’ Antonio Marquez reports the movement is gaining momentum just as National Bike Month brings the issue into sharper focus.

The Indio Police Department is leading efforts to promote bike safety with helpful reminders for cyclists and drivers alike:

  • Wear a helmet

  • Follow all traffic laws

  • Use hand signals and bike lanes when available

  • Stay alert and ride in the same direction as traffic

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at dawn or dusk

  • Use front and rear lights on bikes to increase visibility

“We’re increasing education and enforcement in high traffic areas and working with the city to improve signage and bike-friendly infrastructure,” a police spokesperson said. “We also partner with schools and community events to promote safety awareness.”

Police emphasize that safety is a shared responsibility. “Drivers must also watch for cyclists and drive slowly in areas where bikes are common,” they added.

In a separate event, hundreds of Run for the Wall motorcycle riders stopped at Shelly’s Travel Center in Coachella as part of their cross-country journey to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

Run for the Wall, now in its 50th year, is a 10-day ride from Ontario, California, to the nation’s capital. The annual event honors service members who were prisoners of war, missing in action, or killed in action.

“We ride for those who can’t,” one participant said. “Our mission is to bring awareness to POWs and MIAs, especially from the Vietnam War, and to honor their sacrifice.”

The riders left Coachella around 10 a.m. to continue their journey eastward, carrying a powerful message of remembrance and respect across the country.
