Health Minute: Milwaukee Schools Take Action as Lead Poisoning Remains a Threat to Children Nationwide

The danger of lead poisoning remains a serious concern for many aging schools across America. Now, officials in Milwaukee, Wisconsin are stepping up efforts to remove the potent neurotoxin from their facilities. NBC’s Mandy Gaither reports on this urgent public health issue in today’s Health Minute.

Lead is a naturally occurring metal found in air, soil, and water. While exposure is dangerous to everyone, it poses the greatest threat to young children whose bodies and nervous systems are still developing. “There is no safe amount of lead,” said Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Dr. Gupta explained that while lead can eventually leave the body, it tends to accumulate in the blood, soft tissues, and organs over time, which can cause lasting damage.

For children, lead poisoning can lead to brain and nervous system damage, slowed growth and development, behavioral and learning issues, and hearing and speech problems. Adults who experience significant lead toxicity may face cardiovascular complications, cognitive decline, and central nervous system disorders.

Experts recommend several ways to minimize the risk of lead exposure:

  • Prevent paint deterioration and address water damage promptly.

  • Keep homes and schools clean and dust-free.

  • Clean painted areas with a wet rag to remove lead dust.

  • Use cold water for cooking and drinking, and regularly flush drinking water outlets.

  • Clean outlet screens and faucet aerators frequently.

  • Wash children’s bottles, pacifiers, and toys often.

  • Encourage children to remove shoes and wash hands after playing outside.

Milwaukee’s proactive work to remove lead from schools is a model for communities nationwide as public health officials continue to advocate for safer environments for children and families.
