On this week’s Desert Entertainment, host Tod Macofsky welcomed Terry Ray and Thomas Wheatley from Palm Springs’ Bent Theater Company to spotlight their current production, The Inheritance Part One. The sweeping, two-part LGBTQ-centered drama runs at the Palm Springs Cultural Center through May 25.

Terry Ray explained that the show, which won a Tony Award in 2020, had its Broadway run cut short due to the pandemic. “It’s an epic two-part story, very much like Angels in America, but not as many people have seen it yet,” Ray said. Part Two is slated to open Bent Theater’s next season in October.

The Bent Theater Company remains the only LGBTQ-centered theater in Riverside County and is one of just three in all of Southern California. “We try to offer shows that are entertaining but also important to the community,” said Ray.

Thomas Wheatley, who is making his Palm Springs stage debut, shared his excitement about performing with the Bent. “It’s been an unbelievable experience, filled with a lot of laughs and a lot of tears. This is a very important show,” Wheatley said.

The play explores generational dynamics within the gay community, touching on the legacy and spiritual inheritance passed from one era to the next. Without giving too much away, Ray described it as “a story of what we inherit from the gay community that came before us and the personal inheritances we receive in life.”

In addition to promoting the production, the Bent Theater Company has offered two free tickets for The Inheritance Part One to one lucky NBC Palm Springs viewer. Interested audience members can enter by visiting NBCPalmSprings.com and signing up on the Cool Page.

Other Desert Entertainment highlights included upcoming events like the Marinelli Brothers Circus at The Shops at Palm Desert, Broadway Barbara’s musical show at the Purple Room Supper Club, Honk Junior by Desert Theatricals at the Rancho Mirage Amphitheater, and an evening with Oscar winner George Chakiris at Revolution Stage Company in Palm Springs.

For theater lovers, Palm Springs is delivering a full slate of culture and entertainment this May.
