President Trump Visits Qatar After Announcing Major Saudi Arms Deal and Lifting Sanctions on Syria

President Donald Trump continued his diplomatic tour of the Middle East today, traveling to Qatar following a series of high-profile announcements and meetings in Saudi Arabia.

NBC’s Alice Barr reports that Trump met with leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council in Saudi Arabia to discuss strengthening business ties with the region’s wealthy states. A key outcome was the announcement of a $142 billion Saudi purchase of American military equipment, part of a broader pledge to invest $600 billion in the U.S. economy.

“We’ve launched the golden age of America. The golden age of the Middle East can proceed right alongside of us,” President Trump said.

Trump also used the trip to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions while unexpectedly announcing the lifting of sanctions on Syria’s new government, a move reportedly encouraged by Saudi Arabia’s crown prince.

The president’s next stop is Qatar, which has already drawn controversy. The Trump Organization, under the leadership of the president’s sons, has ongoing real estate developments in several countries on his itinerary, including Qatar.

Further controversy surrounds the Qatari government’s unfinalized proposal to gift a $400 million luxury jet to the Pentagon, to serve initially as Air Force One and later as part of Trump’s presidential library collection.

“I thought it was a beautiful gesture,” President Trump remarked. “Only a stupid person would say we shouldn’t accept it.”

However, the proposed gift has prompted concerns among lawmakers, including many Republicans, over the legal and national security implications. The jet would require costly upgrades to meet defense standards, raising further debate.

“There are lots of issues around that that I think will attract very serious questions if and when it happens,” one senator noted.

The Senate’s top Democrat has vowed to block all judicial nominees until the Attorney General testifies about the legality of the gift.

The developments mark another chapter in President Trump’s controversial yet impactful diplomatic outreach to the Middle East.
