Riverside County Homelessness Up 7%, But More Shelter Beds Offer Hope

A new snapshot of homelessness in Riverside County reveals both progress and continued challenges. According to the latest Point-in-Time count, the county's homeless population has increased by 7% over the past two years.

Despite the overall rise, there is some encouraging news: fewer individuals are living unsheltered on the streets. Officials attribute this to a 57% increase in shelter capacity since 2023.

County leaders say the growth in shelter space is proof that their ongoing efforts to reduce homelessness are having an impact.

“We know that increasing shelter beds gives people a chance to begin the transition to permanent housing,” a county spokesperson said. “While there’s still a long road ahead, these numbers show that targeted strategies are making a difference.”

Programs across the Coachella Valley and greater Riverside County have focused on expanding emergency housing, supportive services, and transitional housing solutions.
