5 Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin This Summer, According to Experts
Your skin is the body’s largest organ, and it plays a vital role in protecting you from germs and regulating your body temperature. That’s why keeping it healthy—especially during summer—is so important.
In today’s Health Minute, Mandy Gaither shares five tips from Dr. Shane Dormedy of El Camino Health to help you protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays.
Use sunscreen
Dr. Dormedy says SPF 30 is sufficient for most people, but proper application is key. Sunscreen needs to be applied evenly to all exposed skin.Apply sunscreen correctly
Put sunscreen on at least 15 minutes before going outdoors to give it time to absorb. Reapply every two hours—or more frequently if you’ve been swimming, sweating, or toweling off.Avoid peak sun hours
Try to stay out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when UV rays are strongest. Seek shade whenever possible.Wear protective clothing
Cover your skin with clothing, wear UV-protective sunglasses, and opt for a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and neck.Be aware of reflective surfaces
If you're heading to the beach, keep in mind that sand and water can reflect and magnify UV rays, increasing your risk of sunburn.
Taking these simple steps can go a long way in maintaining healthy skin and preventing sun damage.
