FBI Agent and Palm Springs Fire Chief Hailed as Heroes for Saving Embryos After Clinic Bombing

Just days after a terrorist attack shook downtown Palm Springs, two first responders are being praised for an act of extraordinary bravery. Palm Springs Deputy Fire Chief Greg Lyle and FBI agent Chris Melzer rushed into the damaged American Reproductive Centers facility following Saturday's explosion—risking their lives to save cryogenic tanks containing hundreds of embryos and eggs.

Deputy Chief Lyle, who was off duty at the time, got an alert about the explosion and instinctively responded. “It was a normal day off,” Lyle recalled, “but I heard enough in the alert to know I had to get there.” Once on scene, he pitched what he called “a crazy plan” to the FBI: go inside the unstable, heavily damaged building and try to save the IVF materials.

FBI bomb technician Chris Melzer quickly joined him. The two—backed by Palm Springs Fire, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, and FBI bomb squad personnel—braved the uncertainty of possible secondary threats inside the structure.

“Him and I were together in our thinkings,” Lyle said, “and at one point verbalized, you know, hey, if we don’t do something, the bad guy wins.”

Inside the clinic, they located the cryogenic tanks and worked with the team to restore power, ensuring the embryos and reproductive materials remained intact. Their efforts were successful. No eggs or embryos were lost.

One text message stood out to Lyle: a fellow firefighter thanking him for saving the embryos his wife needed for an appointment just days later. “Pretty crazy,” Lyle said, reflecting on how close the community ties truly are.

NBC Palm Springs also shared a touching video message from grateful patients thanking the team for protecting their family’s future. One child even thanked the responders “for protecting his future sister.”

Through courage, quick thinking, and selflessness, Greg Lyle and Chris Melzer helped safeguard the dreams of countless families in the wake of tragedy.
