Traffic Alert: Roadwork in La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, and Along Highway 111
It’s time to plan your week and avoid getting stuck in construction backups. In this week’s Know Before You Go report, CVAG’s Chris Gunterson joined NBC Palm Springs live from the Traffic Management Center in Palm Desert to break down major traffic projects happening across the valley.
La Quinta:
Tomorrow, crews will begin replacing a traffic signal cabinet at Jefferson Street and Avenue 50. The intersection will be in red flash mode, and at times, the signal may go dark. Stop signs will be in place, but backups are possible. To avoid delays, consider detouring via Madison, Monroe, or Washington Street.
Palm Desert/Rancho Mirage:
Southern California Edison continues its vault replacement project along Monterey Avenue, between Magnesia Falls and Las Palmas (or Gran Via, depending on direction). The southbound lanes are affected, with work expected to last another 1–2 weeks. Backups are light, but Bob Hope Drive is a good alternate route.
Palm Springs:
Bridge demolition is underway at the South Palm Canyon Bridge, and delays are expected as traffic is rerouted to the southeast side. Crews are working to improve signal timing to help traffic flow, but drivers should prepare for extra wait times. To stay informed, sign up for updates at southpalmcanyonbridgeproject.com.
SR111 Roadway Project:
Night work has now transitioned to daytime construction, including paving, driveway, and bus stop upgrades. This project is ongoing for the next six to seven months. Expect increased activity during the day. Sign up for alerts at sr111roadwayproject.com.
Bicycle Safety Tip:
As part of National Bicycle Safety Month, Chris shared that new traffic cameras installed throughout the valley can detect bicycles and grant extra green light time. Look for the lime green square with a bike symbol at intersections. No need to press the pedestrian button—just stop on the bike symbol and the camera will do the rest.
And as always, remember to slow down and put the phone down. Stay safe, and we’ll see you next Monday.
