Trump Claims Progress in Ukraine War Talks After Calls with Putin, Zelenskyy

President Donald Trump held back-to-back phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday in what he described as a renewed effort to end the war in Ukraine.

Following the conversations, Trump posted on Truth Social stating, “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war.” He added that the terms would be worked out directly between the two nations.

Russian state media echoed a positive tone, reporting that Putin was “appreciative” of the call and open to working on a memorandum of a future peace agreement. Putin reportedly said a ceasefire is “possible” and stressed the importance of mutual compromise.

Despite those remarks, no official ceasefire has been declared, and past mediation efforts have fallen short. Trump’s involvement marks a continuation of months-long efforts to influence peace talks between the two countries.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking from Air Force Two after meeting with President Zelenskyy in Rome, commented on the difficulty of diplomacy. “That takes two to tango,” Vance said. “If Russia is not willing… we’re going to say this is not our war.”

Trump revealed the Vatican has shown interest in hosting future negotiations — a move that could shift the dynamic if both parties agree to meet on neutral ground.

The phone call between Trump and Putin reportedly lasted about two hours. As of now, any concrete progress toward a ceasefire remains uncertain.
