Vista Del Monte Students Connect Globally Through Modernism Art in a Box Exchange
Vista Del Monte Elementary School in Palm Springs hosted a virtual celebration this week, marking the conclusion of the “Modernism Art in a Box” Cultural Exchange—a creative and cross-cultural collaboration between fourth-grade students in Palm Springs and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Over four days, 31 bilingual students from each city worked together on modernist architectural projects, blending lessons in design, climate awareness, and cultural identity. Their efforts culminated in a virtual presentation, where students showcased their models, shared insights, and reflected on the connections built during the experience.
Palm Springs Mayor Rhonda Hart participated in the celebration, offering remarks that underscored the value of international partnerships in education. “Programs like this build not just creative minds, but global citizens,” she said.
The exchange was made possible through the combined support of Palm Springs Sister Cities, the PS Modern Committee, and the local school districts in both communities.
Organizers say this initiative helps strengthen international ties and introduces young students to the legacy of mid-century modern architecture that defines much of Palm Springs' identity.
The “Modernism Art in a Box” program continues to grow, with hopes to expand to additional schools in the future.
