Local Businesses Reopen After Bombing
Nearly a week has passed since the bombing rocked Palm Springs last Saturday, and many local businesses are beginning to open their doors once again. Among them is DC Custom Upholstery and Supplies, which reopened less than 48 hours after the incident. Jose Chavez, owner of DC Custom Upholstery, described the chaotic moments following the explosion. While he wasn’t at the shop when the bomb detonated, his brother was on site, witnessing the impact firsthand, including shattered windows. The incident struck a personal chord for Chavez and his wife, who have previously relied on an IVF clinic in the past. “The first thing I thought about was whether the embryos were okay,” Chavez said. “It’s been in my head, but you just have to keep working.”
Financial realities played a significant role in their decision to resume business so quickly. “Most of our guys live paycheck to paycheck,” Chavez explained. “Sometimes during the summer, the shop is slow. It’s hard, and it’s getting harder every year.”
Nearby, another local business stayed open not only for economic reasons but to provide a safe and welcoming space for community members to talk and process the event. “It felt odd to just close our doors when so many people were coming in wanting to talk,” one owner said.
Chavez also expressed gratitude for the city’s support, emphasizing the importance of both financial and emotional backing during such challenging times. “The support from the city has been huge—it helps mentally and financially.” Though the bombing was undeniably tragic, Chavez finds hope in the resilience displayed by Palm Springs residents and businesses alike. “This event was tragic, but it showed me how strong our city really is.” For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
