Severe Weather Threatens Millions Over Memorial Day Weekend

Severe weather is threatening to disrupt Memorial Day weekend plans for millions of travelers across the country. Heavy rainfall and strong storms are forecasted for parts of the Central Plains and Mississippi Valley, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. Many of these areas were devastated by tornadoes last weekend, with towns like Grinnell, Kansas, and London in Laurel County, Kentucky, still reeling from the destruction.

Forecasters predict locally heavy rainfall between four to six inches, increasing the risk of flash flooding in already saturated areas. In Kentucky, neighborhoods in London and surrounding communities, already ravaged by last weekend’s storms, face additional flooding risks.

Meanwhile, a rare May nor’easter is bringing cool temperatures and heavy rain to parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, compounding travel disruptions during a holiday weekend when an estimated 45 million people are expected to be on the move.

Travelers are advised to plan ahead, monitor weather updates, and exercise caution on the roads. For the latest storm information and updates, visit our newsroom at NBCPalmSprings.com.
