Tariffs Spike Flower Prices for Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is feeling the sting of international trade tensions. Across the U.S., the price of imported flowers has surged ahead of the holiday. In Los Angeles, the largest flower district is seeing nearly double the cost compared to last year. That’s largely due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. About 80% of flowers sold in the U.S. are imported, mostly from Colombia. Colombia alone supplies 60% of those flowers and is now subject to a 10% tariff. But vendors say it’s not just the tariffs raising prices. It’s also the uncertainty that prevents them from planning ahead. Business owner Sal Jimenez says customers are waiting until the last minute to buy. The ripple effect impacts not only flowers but also packaging and add-ons like teddy bears. Despite this, shoppers are still turning out to buy for mom. For now, love is still winning over price tags.
