Pope Leo Pays Tribute to Pope Francis at His Tomb in Rome
On Sunday, Pope Leo visited the tomb of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, at Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major. The visit also included a moment of homage to the icon of Sallius Populi Romani, known as the protectress of the Roman people.
The visit took place on the same day that Pope Leo was installed as the bishop of Rome during a ceremony at the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, had chosen the Basilica of St. Mary Major as his final resting place. This decision marked a departure from tradition, as previous pontiffs are typically entombed in St. Peter’s Basilica within Vatican City.
Pope Leo’s visit highlighted the continuation of reverence and respect for Pope Francis and his legacy within the Catholic Church.
