For the first time since 1933, the United States men’s hockey team has won the IIHF World Championship Tournament, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime Sunday in Stockholm, Sweden. The historic victory ended a 91-year drought for Team USA at the IIHF gold medal game.

The championship game remained scoreless through regulation until Team USA secured the win in overtime. During the trophy presentation, players held up the #13 jersey of Johnny Goudreau, a former USA and NHL player.

Goudreau and his brother Matthew tragically passed away last year after being fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver while cycling in New Jersey. The tribute to Goudreau during Team USA’s championship celebration served as a poignant reminder of his lasting impact on the hockey community.

The team’s victory has sparked excitement among fans and brought renewed pride to U.S. hockey, marking a significant achievement for the nation’s sporting history.
