CIF Announces Pilot Entry Process for Track and Field Amid Backlash Over Transgender Athlete Participation

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced a rule change today designed to ensure all track and field student athletes can compete. The change, known as the pilot entry process, comes after backlash surrounding the participation of a transgender athlete from Jurupa Valley High School.

CIF stated that the new policy aims to guarantee biologically female athletes who may have been displaced by transgender athletes have the opportunity to compete. Officials emphasized that the change is intended to address concerns about fair play while maintaining inclusion.

The move comes after political pressure mounted, with President Trump threatening to withhold federal funding from California if transgender athletes were allowed to compete in girls' sports. Trump specifically mentioned the Jurupa Valley athlete, who is the only transgender competitor at the state track and field meet.

The pilot entry process is expected to provide additional pathways for qualifying and participation, ensuring fair competition for all athletes as CIF continues to navigate evolving policies around inclusion and fairness in high school sports.
