Hitting the Snooze Button Could Cost You a Night’s Sleep Each Month, Study Finds

In other medical news, a new study reveals that hitting the snooze button may cost you more sleep than you think.

According to researchers, the average snoozer spends an extra 11 minutes in bed after the first alarm goes off, but this isn’t usually quality sleep. Over time, those seemingly harmless minutes can add up to an entire night’s worth of sleep loss each month.

The study’s author warns that losing sleep in this way can increase the risk of cognitive impairment and negatively affect your mood.

So, what can you do to break the habit? Researchers recommend setting your first alarm as late as possible and sticking to a consistent bedtime, changing it by no more than 30 minutes—even on weekends. Overall, experts advise adults to aim for the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night to support good health.
