How Setting Boundaries Can Improve Mental Health and Relationships

Setting boundaries is a key part of maintaining mental health and building healthier relationships, but it’s not always easy to do. In today’s Health Minute, Mandy Gaither shares expert advice on how to set healthy boundaries.

“Saying no can be hard,” says licensed therapist Jody Bomstein from Children’s Health Care of Atlanta. “But not having boundaries isn’t good for anyone. It can leave you feeling depleted, with unmet needs, and it can affect your mental health.”

To begin setting healthy boundaries, Bomstein suggests reflecting on your own needs and limits—without comparing yourself to others. “We all have different needs and limits,” she explains. Next, align your actions with your personal values. If you know you need to limit how much you take on to protect your mood, sleep, or family relationships, keep reminding yourself of those reasons.

Bomstein also emphasizes the importance of communicating boundaries clearly and assertively. “Consistency is key,” she says. “That helps people understand the boundaries you’ve set.” And remember, learning to say no is crucial. “No can be a full sentence,” Bomstein adds. “You don’t need to explain it or justify it. It’s about protecting your mental health and your relationships.”
