U.S. State Department Orders Pause on New Student Visa Appointments

The U.S. State Department has directed embassies and consulates around the world to pause new student visa appointments, according to a diplomatic cable signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The directive is part of an ongoing effort to review and enhance the screening and vetting process for visa applicants. One key area of expansion is the increased inspection of applicants’ social media accounts, a practice that has already been in place for select cases. State Department officials warn that these changes could significantly slow down visa processing times for students.

This move comes as the Trump administration has taken steps to revoke many existing student visas and attempted to block foreign students from studying at institutions like Harvard. However, a judge has since postponed the enforcement of that particular action.

While no clear timeline has been given for the review, the pause on new student visa appointments is expected to create uncertainty for international students planning to study in the U.S.
