ICE Agents Detain Multiple Immigrants at San Francisco Immigration Court, Stirring Concerns
At least eight people were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Tuesday in the Bay Area, as federal authorities targeted immigrants appearing at San Francisco’s immigration court.
Sergio Quintana reports that Rodrigo, an immigrant from Colombia, was among those detained. Just minutes after appearing before a judge at the downtown San Francisco court, he was surrounded by a team of five ICE agents and taken into custody.
Observers noted that the detentions were not isolated incidents. According to reports, four of the individuals detained at the San Francisco court were Punjabi speakers. Similar scenes unfolded at other locations, where ICE agents took people into custody after their hearings.
Immigration attorneys expressed concern over these operations, especially since federal agents have typically conducted such detentions only in cases involving serious national security threats, terrorism concerns, or individuals with severe criminal histories. “I’ve been practicing in the San Francisco Immigration Court for over 20 years,” one attorney said, “and the only time I’ve seen ICE make detentions at court is when there was a serious national security risk.”
The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement noting that individuals who entered the U.S. within the last two years are subject to expedited removal procedures. However, recent actions appear to diverge from typical protocol, with attorneys pointing out that in many cases, judges had not dismissed the immigrants’ cases prior to the detentions.
Local residents like Jordan Tarona, who witnessed one of the detentions, voiced frustration. “It’s a completely different story if they’re caught doing illegal activities, but they’re going to the court. They’re following the process. I don’t know what else we’re supposed to be doing,” Tarona said.
The increased ICE presence has also led to an unusually high number of no-shows at immigration court hearings, according to a judge. Attorneys warn that these tactics may discourage immigrants from exercising their legal rights, adding to fears in the community.
