Bumpy Start to 2025: U.S. Air Travel Faces Safety Worries, Real ID Challenges, and Economic Concerns

The 2025 U.S. air travel season has gotten off to a rocky start, with safety incidents, fatal accidents, and an air traffic control meltdown expediting plans to overhaul the system. Memorial Day weekend, often seen as the start of summer travel, brings with it both excitement and a fair share of stress for travelers.

Ivan Rodriguez reports from Atlanta that this holiday weekend is the first major test for travelers needing a Real ID for domestic flights. “Last night, I looked at my license. I double checked, I triple checked just to make sure,” said Craig Reynolds, traveling out of Atlanta. Stephanie Johnson added, “I read up about it and said that it could take the gold or the black star and then the other thing is I know I always have my passport.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 81% of travelers met the Real ID deadline of May 7. However, some states have much lower compliance rates, potentially causing longer security waits and more paperwork for those without one.

Katy Nastro, a travel expert from Going, notes, “It just means that it’s going to take a lot longer to go through the security process as they need an extra step in verification when you don’t have that Real ID.”

Airlines initially projected strong growth in 2025, but concerns over safety and the broader economy have dampened demand. A recent survey by The Conference Board found that the number of Americans planning to fly in the next six months dropped by 12.5% from January to April.

For travelers braving the airports this summer, delays and cancellations are part of the plan. “It keeps you on your toes for sure,” said Laura Cooper, traveling from Atlanta.

Despite the challenges, many remain determined to enjoy their summer travels, though experts urge patience and preparedness for the bumps along the way.
