Harvard Wins Legal Battle to Keep International Students Amid Trump Feud
In a significant legal win for Harvard University, a federal district judge announced a ruling on Thursday to indefinitely block the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and State Department from altering Harvard’s international student visa program. The decision comes amid a heated feud between the Ivy League institution and the Trump administration over issues ranging from antisemitism and free speech to federal funding.
The ruling coincided with Harvard’s 374th commencement ceremony, a day that highlighted both celebration and controversy. Harvard President Alan Garber addressed the graduating class with a message of unity, saying, “Members of the class of 2025, from down the street, across the country and around the world. Around the world, just as it should be.”
Graduating student Thor Reimann reflected on the shifting landscape of higher education, noting, “We leave a much different campus than the one we entered, with Harvard at the center of a national battle over higher education in America.”
The university’s ongoing legal battle centers on the Trump administration’s threats to block federal funding unless Harvard eliminates its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and makes changes to its admissions policies. Meanwhile, fears about the future of Harvard’s current and prospective international students loomed large.
Abdullah Shahid Sial, co-president of the Harvard Undergraduate Association, voiced concerns about the uncertainty, stating, “Many people are looking at perhaps a gap here or any other alternatives, which, again, none of them sound as good as continuing their education within the university. They put in so much effort to get into.”
President Donald Trump responded sharply on Wednesday, saying, “Harvard is treating our country with great disrespect, and all they’re doing is getting in deeper and deeper and deeper. They’ve got to behave themselves.”
Harvard’s leadership remains committed to defending its values and ensuring a stable environment for its diverse student body. Thursday’s ruling follows the Trump administration’s ultimatum giving Harvard a month to respond to attempts to block the university from hosting international students.
