New York Times Partners with Amazon to License Content for AI Training

(CNN) – The New York Times has announced a landmark agreement with Amazon to license its extensive content library for training the tech giant’s AI models, marking a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between journalism and artificial intelligence.

Under the multi-year deal, Amazon’s AI-powered services, including Alexa, will have access to the Times’ wide-ranging content, from NYT Cooking to sports coverage on The Athletic, to generate real-time summaries and short excerpts. The collaboration is intended to expand the reach of The New York Times’s original journalism while ensuring appropriate attribution and accuracy.

“The collaboration will make The New York Times’s original content more accessible to customers across Amazon products and services, including direct links to Times products, and underscores the companies’ shared commitment to serving customers with global news and perspectives within Amazon’s AI products,” the Times said in a statement.

The New York Times Company CEO, Meredith Kopit Levien, highlighted the importance of maintaining the value of quality journalism: “It aligns with our deliberate approach to ensuring that our work is valued appropriately, whether through commercial deals or through the enforcement of our intellectual property rights.”

Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the partnership comes amid ongoing legal battles between news organizations and AI companies over the use of copyrighted content. Last December, The Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging unauthorized use of millions of its articles to train AI services. The new deal with Amazon, however, reflects a growing trend where media companies are striking licensing deals with AI firms to monetize their content.

Amazon users will gain access to Times content with direct links for further reading, ensuring transparency and preserving journalistic integrity. The partnership is an extension of the companies’ existing relationship, which includes hosting Times podcasts on Amazon Music.

While The Times remains open to partnerships with other firms, a spokesperson emphasized the need for “fair value in exchange for the paper’s content and respect for the Gray Lady’s reporting.”

The agreement aligns with a broader industry trend, as publishers like News Corp, The Washington Post, and Reuters have signed similar licensing deals with AI companies, reshaping the landscape of content consumption and digital media.
