With the invention of refrigerators, this practice evolved into placing a pillow atop the fridge for good luck.

Today is also National Paperclip Day, commemorating the original 1867 patent. Initially designed to attach tickets to fabric, the humble paperclip has since become a staple in offices worldwide.
