Riverside County Animal Shelters Over Capacity, Urgent Public Support Needed
Riverside County’s animal shelters are facing a critical situation tonight, with nearly 1,300 dogs and cats filling every available kennel space. Officials are urgently appealing to the public for help through adoptions and fostering to prevent the heartbreaking possibility of euthanasia for these animals.
The San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus has extended its hours to assist in easing the overcrowding crisis. This comes as part of the county’s broader efforts to achieve a “no kill” status—an ambitious goal to save at least 90% of impounded pets through enhanced adoption initiatives, spay-neuter programs, and efforts to reunite pets with their owners.
“Our shelters are beyond capacity, and we need immediate support from the community,” an official said, stressing the urgency of the situation.
Riverside County’s animal services department has faced legal challenges and leadership changes in recent months as it works to improve animal welfare. The current crisis underscores the importance of ongoing reforms and public engagement to ensure the safety and well-being of local pets.
Residents interested in adopting or fostering can visit the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus or other county shelters to help relieve overcrowding and give these animals a second chance.
