Steven Bradford Announces Campaign for California Insurance Commissioner Amid Statewide Insurance Crisis

Former California State Senator Steven Bradford officially announced his candidacy for California State Insurance Commissioner in 2026, citing the urgent need to address the state’s collapsing insurance market. Bradford’s decision comes in the wake of unprecedented disruptions following Los Angeles wildfires and mounting challenges for both homeowners and insurers.

“While too many Californians are struggling to even get insurance, insurance companies are leaving our state at a rapid and unsustainable pace,” said Bradford in his campaign launch statement. “The status quo isn't working for consumers and businesses alike, and profound change is desperately needed to right the ship.”

Bradford, who previously served on the state’s Insurance Committee, highlighted his legislative track record of working across the aisle to deliver solutions on complex issues. “I have decades of experience working across the aisle to address the most challenging issues facing Californians – and plan to continue this collaborative approach to problem-solving as State Insurance Commissioner,” he added.

His campaign platform emphasizes stabilizing California’s insurance marketplace to attract and retain insurers while ensuring affordability and adequate coverage for consumers. Bradford plans to engage with wildfire victims, insurance experts, first responders, consumer groups, and residents across the state. Additionally, he aims to study best practices from other states facing similar natural disaster risks.
